Cryptocurrency ATMs are being exploited as a channel for scams and financial crime, with vulnerable older Australians among those being targeted. I tabled the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security's report on the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Amendment Bill 2026, which recommends urgent action on crypto ATMs. The PJCIS also recommended modernising Australia's counter-terrorism financing framework to ensure it keeps up with new risks. A review of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Amendment Bill is examining reforms to strengthen Australia's financial crime framework, including greater powers for @AUSTRAC and expanded oversight of digital currency exchanges and crypto ATMs. As part of its inquiry, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security is holding a public hearing today to assess evidence from government agencies, regulators and industry bodies on evolving risks in the financial system.

A review into the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Amendment Bill 2026 has commenced an important step in strengthening Australia's response to evolving financial crime. The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security will conduct the inquiry.
