Father Andrzej said in his homily today that God is love. I know this because you showed me how to live it, through the work you did as a public servant, like your dad showed you in his service to our country as a medic during WWII. I’ve tried to follow in your footsteps, to honor our family’s name, to live life as an adventure.
I ran for Congress last year because you told me to give back to this community that’s given me so much. I’m doing it again because you taught me to finish what I start.
But I miss arguing with you about reproductive choice and Hemingway and the federal reserve. I miss finding common ground. You'd be outraged by what they’re doing with crypto meme coins.
I didn’t know why in your final days, when your $25 Casio watch broke you insisted I get you a new one. But I get it now. You wore it as you took your final breaths. I will be forever grateful that I got to be there to ease your pain and hold your hand. And now I wear that watch.
Time ticks on, your legacy lives, and every time I look at my wrist I am reminded that I’m running so everyone can afford to take care of and spend time with the ones they love. I miss you, Padre. But you’re alive in the love I get to share with the good people I get to meet every day on the campaign trail. Happy Father’s Day.
