Scammers stole $11.4 billion through cryptocurrency fraud in 2025 — a 22 percent increase from 2024. Congress is considering a bill that could weaken states' ability to stop crypto scams, including the ability of state attorneys general to crack down on scams and hold scammers accountable.  I've joined a bipartisan coalition of 16 attorneys general in opposing this bill. States have shut down over 330 crypto schemes since 2017. Congress must preserve states' enforcement authority to protect consumers from cryptocurrency fraud. Financial technology and cryptocurrency companies increasingly are seeking to become chartered as national banks. Some of these companies have a history of predatory lending and other risky practices. Allowing these companies to become nationally charted banks will make it harder for my Office to enforce local consumer protections and would create unnecessary risks in the national banking system. That's why I joined other state attorneys general in calling on federal regulators to deny banking charters to companies with a history of harming consumers. I joined a coalition urging the U.S. Department of Labor not to move forward with a rule that could put retirement savings at greater risk.
